THE OWL POST - The K-5 Stem at Boren Newsletter Apologies, images broke, when Seattle Schools relaunched their website.

Week of May 12th, 2014

Message from Denise Lawless (Principal Intern)

It has been such a pleasure working with all of the students and families at K-5 STEM this year. I indeed see the mission of project-based learning expanding your children's thinking and bringing a true love of learning to their lives. It has been so exciting to be a part of this learning community and recognize all the hard work that has been put forth by the incredible teaching team, support staff, and parent volunteers. It is hard to believe that the school year is soon approaching the end. We still have much to do and learn for the rest of our time until summer begins.

Thank you to everyone that participated in bringing food for the staff appreciation week. Every day was truly a delight for our staff members and everyone that contributed did such a great job making the event a success!

Our Fiesta Book Fair also went extremely well this last Wednesday. Ms. Hare certainly appreciated all the parent volunteer help to make it such a huge success. Thank you to everyone that attended!

Here are various items that are in progress:

Safety Patrol Bake Sale: This Friday, May 16th and Friday the 23rd, the safety patrol will be having a before and after school bake sale to raise money for their year-end trip to Wild Waves. Please bring your donations and receive some yummy items to help partially fund this fun event to help reward all their hard work. They are working hard to promote safety and fair play at recess, which deserves a huge celebration. Also, a big thank you goes out to Hayward for putting so much effort into our safety patrol this year!

STEM Spring Olympics: The students are all getting ready and excited to participate in the STEM Spring Olympics that will be happening the week of May 27th-30th. Student will have an opening ceremony in the Olympic fashion as each class picked out a country to represent. Ms. Gray will be hosting the games that will include both summer and winter like events. It is so fun to see such creativity here at K-5 STEM! The students are going to really enjoy this event.

Classroom News

Mrs. Bilanko's classroom

We are publishing our realistic fiction stories, which helped prep students for our movie making project. Mind Unwind has been doing an awesome job teaching students about movie making and leading them through the process. We are filming our movie this week, editing it next week, and then hopefully premiering it to the school the first week of June at an assembly. We are also incubating our second round of eggs, hopefully they work this time! Students are researching different planets in our solar system. They are recording facts in a flap book and making models. Towards the end of May we will begin our roller coaster project. Students will use what they have learned about balance and motion in science to help them build roller coasters out of recyclable materials.

Online Book Fair is still open

It's open through May 20th, and there are 8 days left to shop! It's where you can get the elusive "Minecraft: The Essential Handbook"! All books are delivered free to STEM and will be delivered to your child's classroom. Shop here.

STEM Spring Olympics

The STEM Spring Olympics are coming soon and we need volunteers to help with the stations on May 27 - May 28th. Please sign up for one or multiple slots throughout each day.
